Author Poll: Therapeutic Edits

I'm toying around with this idea of offering therapeutic editing services through my blog and wanted to see what, if anything, people thought about it.

I've offered edits of this sort to contest winners as a prize, and I've gotten really good feedback from those winning authors. I use track changes and make thoughtful comments about character consistency, plot feasibility, and personality traits as well as did the usual line editing stuff (I was a journalism and psychology double major in undergrad).

This service would be for synopses, first 3 chapters, full length manuscripts...you name it, it would be game.

So I'm asking if this is something authors would be interested, and if so, would charging a fee be reasonable? How much? Ludicrous? Genius?

I'm trying to get some perspectives on whether to offer this service or not, so if you could weigh in below in the comment section, I'd really appreciate it. You can just vote yay or nay or if you have some idea to add, feel free! I'm not married to this idea, so no feelings will be hurt. :)

Thanks, and happy Monday!

I think it's a great idea. I've wondered before why you didn't do something like this. :-) As for fees, you might want to look around and see what others are charging. Though you're not published, you're still an expert on what you're editing for (psych stuff!) so take that into account.
Still, you might want to start on the lower end for prices to convince people to try you out, but then once you've established credibility and everything, you'll be worth more. *grin*
Wishing you the best with this!

I think it's a great idea as well, and agree with Jessica Nelson about charging a fee. Best of luck!

Maybe do the first ten at a discount to encourage people to sign up? I think it's a good idea. The synopsis readings should probably be for free (in which case do it weekly or monthly like your character evaluations) or at minimal cost as they don't require as much time.

How much time would you plan to spend doing these? A psychologist can charge anywhere from $130.00 to $175.00 per hour here in the midwest and that would be considered perfectly reasonable.

Oops, just realized posting from my husband's computer, incase you thought Claude sounded oddly female

Hi! I've just stumbled onto your blog through Query Tracker.

An edit focusing on character consistency, development, and how it relates to the plot would be very interesting!

As an unpublished writer I guess I'd prefer to get feedback relating just to these elements than pay for a line edit too. (The possibility being that there may be quite a bit of revising after reading your comments!)

Both comments and questions are welcome. I hope you enjoyed your time on the couch today.
