Regrets and What They Say About Your Character

Join me over at Seriously Write today as I continue my series of how to get to know your main character better through four questions. Today we're on Question 3.

If you missed the previous two posts in this series, you can click here for Question 1 (What is your greatest fear?) and here for Question 2 (What is your biggest acomplishment?). But for now, I’ll just jump right in to the next question.

Question 3: What is your biggest regret?

The answer to this question truly reveals a goldmine of information about someone, on at least two layers that I’ll explore further here.

If a character’s regret centers around themselves, how they were unable to get a big promotion or marry the right person, that’s revealing in and of itself. If it centers on how someone else was mistreated or abused or harmed in some way, that gives information. Even more so, if the character’s regret centers on something they said or did in the past that harmed someone else.

Click here to continue reading and then come back and talk about your biggest regret and what you think that says about YOU.

My biggest regret is that I didn't get to know my husband better before we got married. We rushed into a life together out of desperation, I think. I was in my late twenties, he in his thirties.

We just celebrated our 14th anniversary, so we've mostly made it work, but it's still pretty rocky at times and our young son is really afraid we'll get divorced.

I don't know if I would have broken up or still married him, but I wish i'd been more circumspect about it in any case, due to all the heartache it's caused us and everyone around us.

These are some great questions. I think it's funny how posts like this make me think of one specific WIP, different ones for different posts, but mostly just one at a time. These questions right now make me think of my story with the aging wizard and cursed fighter. I know what the wizard fears and what the fighter regrets, but not answers to all three questions so far for each.

Oh. I have come across these questions for the first time and I definitely think it would be a great exercise for my characters. I will check out the other 2 questions too! Thank you..very thought-provoking indeed!

This is a great series, Jeannie! (Made we want to try to remember what I input in your form a few weeks ago when I submitted one of my characters for therapy!) I'm going to put links to all of your posts on my blog for future reference. :)

I don’t believe in regrets… I am how I am because of mistakes and my successes. I guess if I didn’t love who I am, then I might see things different.
